That’s an interesting, if long, way to get there that wouldn’t work in some states. Many states have something along the lines of a bonded title process for this situation where a vehicle doesn’t have a title or the chain of transfer can’t be established.
It generally goes along on the lines of f ill out some extra forms and put up a bond for a percentage of the value to get a bonded title in your name (after it has cleared an NCIC check) which lets you register it and shows provisional proof of ownership . If after a period of time no one comes forward to challenge your bonded title, you can then get a full, regular title (and the bond back) and operate as usual from there.

and eventually my local county will start doing VIN inspections again, since it is one of the COVID cutbacks.

Use Maine for trailers and you're all set. For as long as this loophole has been around, I'm shocked it hasn't been closed. Must create enough revenue to make it worth it.

I’ve never needed to use the Vermont registration trick but it’s nice to know it’s still available.

Can confirm this works. Did it a few years ago to get a title in MD on a 1989 NightHawk. I rode around on the Vermont
plates till they came up for renewal and then transferred
it to MD title and plates.

Can anyone answer this question for me? What happens when I try to transfer the registration and apply for a title in my home state, but the bike in question is already titled in my state to someone else? I’ve got an old dirtbike that I’d love to title, but I know for a fact that there is already a title out there, and due to the Drivers Privacy Protection Act, I have no way of finding out who it’s titled to, or contacting them.

If it is a vehicle you own already but need a title that you lost, you can likely go to the DMV/SOS to get a replacement. At least here in Michigan, and I’ve done it in Ohio too. But it’s simple. But for the example in the article that was a new purchase, so guess you’ll have to go the long way round, unless the seller can go to their DMV/SOS to get a replacement first.

I’ve got one of these to try as well... I keep worrying that “the scam” will become too well known, and they’ll shut it down. But I guess it’s been an established way to recover title status for a long time.

I’ve registered old ass standup jetskis with a bill of sale from the wrong owner lol. Luckily, the title owner hadn’t gotten tabs for like 10 years so they allowed me to sign some extra forms basically saying if the actual title owner showed up within a certain amount of time. , I’d have to forfeit the asset.

The funny thing is for Vermont it is free money. For the rest of the states, I suspect they feel if you want to register the vin and it’s not yours legally, I suppose they know where you live if that results in a problem....
